Deloitte trio saddle up for charity

I want to ride my bicycle: Deloitte's Jason Norris prepares for the 'Ride Across Britain'

Three members of Deloitte’s Birmingham office are preparing for the ride of their lives as they cycle the length of the UK in aid of charity.

Chris Robertson, Richard Moore, and Jason Norris, who are all based at Deloitte’s office in Brindleyplace, are taking part in the firm’s ‘Ride Across Britain’ from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

The Birmingham trio will join more than 100 cyclists from Deloitte’s offices across the UK on 12 June 2010 as they start the 1,000-mile journey from Scotland to the most southerly tip of England. The gruelling ride will take nine days to complete, with each rider on average clocking up 112 miles each day.

The Deloitte cyclists will be joined by more than 500 others, including clients of the firm, members of public and sporting stars, including Paralympic gold medallist Sarah Storey.

The riders will be raising money for ParalympicsGB. Deloitte has chosen the charity as it is aligned to Deloitte Disability Sport, a programme that aims to get disabled people active and competing and winning in sport. Over the next four years the firm aims to raise £1m for the charity.

Jason Norris, who works in Deloitte’s Global Employer Services team, said the Birmingham riders were aiming to raise £8,000 to put towards the fundraising total. To date, the team has raised £6,460.

He said: “We’ve each set ourselves ambitious targets to reach but we believe we can do it. All of the riders are committed to raising as much money as possible for the charity.

“It is essential that ParalympicsGB continues to receive the financial support it requires to train, improve and inspire athletes in the run up to London 2012.”

In preparation for the challenge, the cyclists have been training intensively since the winter of 2009. During the race, each rider will burn around 23,600 calories – the equivalent of 236 bananas.

Jason said: “We’re all taking this pretty seriously. One thousand miles is a long way and more than any of us has ever cycled. We all want to finish the course so we’ve tried to prepare as much as possible, which has meant spending most evening and weekends in the saddle.”

The Deloitte Ride Across Britain will be run and managed by Threshold Sports.

James Cracknell, Olympian and co-founding director, said: “We’re delighted to be supported by Deloitte for the Deloitte Ride Across Britain. We wanted to create a cycling event that would give everybody the opportunity to get outdoors and achieve something new and exciting.

“Selecting ParalympicsGB as the charity partner will provide disability sport with an extra boost to help nurture and develop future Paralympians. Deloitte’s contribution will have a lasting impact for years to come.”
