Mills & Reeve advises on college merger

A team of lawyers from law firm Mills & Reeve has helped broker a ground-breaking merger between two London colleges of further education.

The new College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London will serve the whole of the Upper Lea Valley, with a significant capital investment to rebuild and develop both centres.

The merger, seen as an Olympics legacy for the future, joins together the Tottenham-based College of North East London (CoNEL), which has 14,000 students, and Enfield College, with 6,000 students.

The Mills & Reeve team, jointly led by Neil Burton, who specialises in corporate and commercial law for further and higher education clients, and Nick Abbott, head of Mills & Reeve’s Further Education Group, acted for CoNEL during the 15-month long negotiations for the merger. Also on the team were Christian Bull, Shazia Ali-Webber, Jan Harris and Harry Scott.

“This is a very exciting development for both colleges and we were delighted to act for CoNEL throughout the merger negotiations and planning,” said Neil. “The new college will provide significant benefits for students and employers in the area.”

Chris McCutcheon, Vice-Principal Finance and Resources for CoNEL, said both colleges would be strengthened by the merger, which would bring the best of both together.

“The merger went through very smoothly and efficiently thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of the Mills & Reeve team,” he said. “We have been able to create a college for the future, which will serve the whole community.”
