Midlands Media Awards flying high

The final few tickets for this year’s Midlands Media Awards are flying out of the door – which is very appropriate, given that the event is being sponsored by Birmingham International Airport.

It is the second year that Birmingham Airport (BIA) has sponsored the awards, which culminate in a glittering finale next week at New Bingley Hall, Birmingham.

At the finale, on 18 June, guests will find out who will be the successor to the ‘Nottingham Evening Post’ as the Midlands region’s ‘Newspaper of the Year’, as well as who has won the individual awards.

The prestigious ‘Newspaper of the Year’ category is being sponsored by another business from the airline sector, bmibaby (BMI).

John Lamb, chairman of the Birmingham Press Club, which is organising the event, said: “The Midlands Media Awards is now in its seventh year, and is as popular as ever.

“It is now established as one of the leading competitions for recognising and rewarding the achievements of journalists and the various media they work in, which this year we have extended by adding an online category.

“The high regard that the awards is held in can be gauged by the quality of the sponsors that we are able to attract, which this year is once again headed by Birmingham International Airport, and also our overall sponsor, Royal Mail.

“We are indebted to them, and our other sponsors, for giving their support to what should be a terrific night on 18 June.”

John Morris, head of corporate and community affairs at Birmingham Airport, said: “We are thrilled to be sponsoring this prestigious awards ceremony for the second year running.

“The calibre of entrants improves each year and we are looking forward to seeing the outcomes of each category on the night.

“It really will be an aviation themed evening with bmibaby on board as a sponsor, as well as Gambia Experience kindly donating a week long holiday for two in a beachfront setting in Kotu as a prize for a lucky guest.”

Ticket sales for the event are going fast, although there is still time to secure the last few. Also, the organisers are still seeking sponsorship for the final few awards categories.

As well as BIA, BMI and Royal Mail, confirmed sponsors so far are Advantage West Midlands, Barclays Wealth, Birmingham University and Retail Birmingham.

Also, Birmingham City Council is sponsoring a new online award, which is aimed at finding the best ‘citizen’s journalist’ from the region’s bloggers and tweeters.
